Shops in humid regions know the pattern: when the monsoon season, “returning wet” weather or days of continuous rain arrive, wire EDM machines start tripping. The machine’s residual-current protection trips on the short circuit caused by dampness — at heart this is a moisture problem.
1. Why Humidity Causes Tripouts
In humid air, moisture condenses easily on the electrical cabinet and conductors — especially exposed wiring — when temperature differences form water droplets. When the machine is restarted, the condensate causes an electrical short, triggering the residual-current device.
2. Three Targeted Solutions
Dry the electrical components
Blow hot air from a hair dryer over the electrical parts inside the cabinet, or on a fine day move the machine into sunlight to dry, removing the condensation.
Place moisture absorbers
Put moisture-absorbing material such as lime bags inside the cabinet to absorb internal humidity and reduce the chance of condensation.
Improve cabinet sealing (the fundamental fix)
Some cabinets are not fully sealed, or doors are left open due to aging or for heat dissipation, allowing oil mist from the wire EDM fluid to build up inside. This residue stays solid normally but soaks up moisture like a sponge; once damp, it becomes conductive and runs down into connectors such as aviation plugs, causing short circuits. Sealing is therefore the root solution — keep cabinet doors closed and consider a sealing upgrade where needed.
3. Daily Moisture Prevention
- During continuous wet weather, keep the workshop ventilated and dry to reduce condensation inside the cabinet.
- Check the cabinet door gasket regularly for aging and the cabinet body for damage.
- Before restarting after long shutdowns, inspect the cabinet interior for condensation and dry it out before applying power.
