Metalworking depends on protecting metal components. Consider an engine cooling system: it contains copper, iron, aluminum, steel and solder, and all of these metals corrode and rust when left in contact with hot water for long periods. Antifreeze does not attack the cooling system — it actually prevents corrosion and removes rust. This is the principle of putting rust prevention and corrosion protection on equal footing when designing a cooling medium.
How antifreeze protects against corrosion. Antifreeze formulations include rust-inhibiting components that form a protective film on metal surfaces. The film blocks direct contact between water and metal, suppressing electrochemical corrosion. At the same time, the corrosion inhibitors help remove existing rust products from the surface. For a cooling system made of several metals, antifreeze provides multi-metal protection — it shields cast iron as well as copper, aluminum and solder alike.

What this means for wire EDM working fluids. The same logic applies to metalworking:

- A wire EDM working fluid stays in contact with the machine — the worktable, wire spool, guide wheel brackets — and with the workpiece over long periods, so rust prevention is a basic requirement.
- Water-based dielectrics use water-soluble rust inhibitors that build a protective layer on the machine and workpiece surfaces. Besides preventing rust, this layer improves surface finish.
- A quality fluid should protect multiple metals, causing no rust or corrosion on steel, copper, aluminum or other workpiece materials.
Usage recommendations.
- Choose a proper working fluid with sufficient rust-inhibiting components and mix it to the recommended ratio — a concentration that is too low weakens rust protection.

- When replacing the fluid, clean the worktable with the freshly mixed solution rather than plain water, so leftover moisture does not cause rust.
- After opening a container, reseal it tightly; a humid or dirty environment degrades the rust-inhibiting performance over time.
Summary. Whether in engine coolant or wire EDM working fluid, corrosion and rust protection is what keeps both equipment and workpieces safe. Selecting a fluid with real rust-inhibiting components and using it correctly is essential for consistent machining quality and longer machine life.
