When a wire EDM spool locks up tight and will not turn, most cases are solved by working through two checks.
1. Check Whether the Molybdenum Wire Is Wedged in the Gap

First determine whether the molybdenum wire has wedged into the gaps on either side of the spool, or even wrapped around the shaft. If so, pull out the trapped wire and the spool usually turns freely again.

2. Check the Spool Mounting Bolts
If the wire is not the cause, check whether the bolts under the spool have seized:
- Loosen the spool mounting bolts.
- Push the spool slowly to its smoothest position.
- Retighten the bolts.

3. Prevention Tips
- During wire loading and at reversal, watch the wire path so the molybdenum wire cannot enter the gaps on either side of the spool.
- Inspect the spool mounting bolts regularly and adjust as soon as sticking appears.
Summary. A jammed spool is almost always caused by wire wrapped around the spool or seized mounting bolts, and both are quick to fix with the two-point check. Keeping the wire path clean and checking the mounting hardware regularly prevents the problem from recurring.
