A medium-speed wire EDM machine (MS-WEDM) runs the wire at high speed in a reciprocating motion while performing multi-pass cutting, offering a useful combination of accuracy and cutting speed. It sits between high-speed (HS-WEDM) and low-speed (LS-WEDM) machines as a balanced choice for many shops.
1. Core Advantages of MS-WEDM

Multi-pass cutting. Like LS-WEDM, MS-WEDM supports multiple passes. The control system automatically adjusts machining parameters (high-frequency pulse width, pulse interval, power-transistor count and wire speed) according to the program, and the operator can fine-tune them. The final pass uses low current and slow wire speed, producing a smooth surface close to LS-WEDM quality — a practical substitute for part of the LS-WEDM workload.
Three-forward, two-back travel. The wire feeding system reverses automatically: three seconds forward, then two seconds back, so the wire advances gradually. Most machines fix these times, but some control systems allow adjustment between 3 and 10 seconds to suit the job. This mode suits work with relaxed accuracy requirements — the surface shows no visible striping to the eye, but marks still exist, just too closely spaced to see.
Single-side discharge. The wire discharges only while moving in one direction and stops discharging on the reverse stroke. This produces better parts than three-forward/two-back travel because only one direction is discharging, so no wire patterns (marking lines) are left on the surface.
Note: both three-forward/two-back and single-side discharge are single-pass processes. Discharge particles remain on the surface, so surface finish does not match multi-pass cutting.
2. Twelve Operating Precautions
- Do not open safety guards on the wire feeding unit or worktable during wire running or machining.
- Never reach over safety guards while the machine is running.
- Never touch the electrode wire — electric shock hazard.
- Do not open electrical cabinet doors while the machine is running or powered, to avoid shock.
- Do not interrupt dielectric flow for extended periods during cutting — it degrades speed and accuracy and damages the wire.
- An emergency stop (mushroom) button is fitted; press it in an emergency.
- Install surge and lightning protection for the machine electrical system.
- The guard is not interlocked with startup — always use it during machining.
- Disconnect power before any maintenance.
- Wear protective gear when clamping and unloading workpieces to prevent impact injuries.
- Clean workpieces at designated stations, wearing goggles, masks and non-slip footwear.
- If the machine emits abnormal noise, smoke, vibration or odor, power off immediately and have it inspected.
Summary: MS-WEDM’s core value is “multi-pass cutting plus automatic parameter adjustment” — surface quality approaching LS-WEDM at lower cost. Strictly following the safety precautions protects both personnel and equipment.
