Flushing quality directly affects wire EDM results. Poor spray causes reversal marks, irregular dark-and-light water streaks and other surface defects that should never be ignored. Flushing system problems typically fall into three groups: spray that is not concentrated on the wire, low pressure and weak flow, and filter tank installation.
1. When the Spray Is Not Concentrated

Work through these steps:
- Increase the flow first — simply open up the flushing flow
- Check the flushing nozzle — if more flow does not help, the nozzle may be blocked: poke it clear, fit a new one, or swap the upper and lower nozzles
- Check the hose — if the spray still does not focus, inspect the water line and blow it clear from the pump side with an air gun, or replace the hose
- Simple guide trick — tear a cloth into strips, fix one strip at the nozzle and lay it onto the wire; water follows the strip directly onto the wire

2. Low Pressure and Weak Flow
- Fit a high-pressure tank — the improvement is marked
- Check the pump by hand: if it feels weak, the pump wiring is probably reversed; correct the connection
- Inspect the hose for blockage and replace if needed
- Clean the flushing nozzle if foreign matter is blocking it
- Check the pump for seizing
- Replace a faulty valve

3. Filter Tank Installation
The filter tank extends dielectric fluid life, raises cleanliness, strengthens flushing and chip removal, and improves surface finish. It is standard equipment on MS-WEDM and often retrofitted on HS-WEDM.
- Seal the connections — coat all hose fittings and external-thread joints with sealant, then wind PTFE tape clockwise about eight turns
- Fit the filter vessel — connect hoses and fittings to the vessel inlet/outlet and tighten every joint, matching the in/out ports to the mounting holes; if the angle is off, add tape to correct it so the hose meets the vessel perpendicular, and clean off any squeezed-out sealant
- Install the pump — connect hoses and fittings to the pump ports and tighten, mount the pump on the tank lid, and align the pump holes with the hose holes
- Connect the high-pressure line — join pump and filter vessel with the high-pressure hose, tightening so the male taper seats fully into the female tapers at both ends to prevent leaks
- Test — after assembly, run the system at maximum pressure and confirm every joint is leak-free
Troubleshoot flushing problems in order — flow, nozzle, hose, pump, valve. On the filter tank, sealing and testing are everything. Stable flushing is the foundation of reliable chip removal, good finish and consistent machining.
