Both high-speed and medium-speed wire EDM machines rely on dielectric fluid. The fluid flushes the kerf, cools the molybdenum wire and workpiece, and carries away the heat of spark discharge; it also removes erosion debris. But fluid flowing from top to bottom cannot all pass through the narrow kerf, so splash is unavoidable. Oil-based fluid scatters oily stains across the machine, while water-based fluid that repeatedly wets and dries can rust the worktable if the machine is not kept up. That is why splash containment matters.

1. Why Machine Guards Are Not Enough

Machines come with splash guards, but in practice the workpiece can be larger than the guard covers, the guards can get in the way of loading and unloading, and dirty guards eventually block the operator’s view of the workpiece.

2. The Sponge Splash-Containment Method

Sponge sheet on the worktable. Lay an even layer of thin sponge, about 10–15 mm thick, across the worktable surface. Fluid sprayed down is absorbed by the sponge instead of bouncing and splashing.

Sponge at the upper guide wheel. Tuck a thin sponge near the upper guide wheel and adjust its position so the fluid runs straight down along the molybdenum wire without affecting the fluid flow rate.

3. Additional Benefits

The sponge method does more than stop splash:

  1. The sponge saturates quickly and does not interfere with fluid circulation.
  2. It traps a large amount of erosion debris, oil and fluid; combined with the machine’s own filtration, this greatly extends working fluid life.
  3. The worktable becomes much easier to clean.
  4. When the sponge collects too much debris, simply replace it.

Summary. The sponge method is low-cost and effective, combining splash containment, debris trapping and longer fluid life. Laying a sponge on the worktable and packing one at the upper guide wheel noticeably improves the splash problem.
